If you are on a septic tank then you need to treat your plumbing a little bit differently then if you were connected to city sewer. A septic tank is an incredible way sewage is taken care of, but it depends on a lot of very simple maintenance. It requires a septic tank and a drain field, and both need to be taken care of in order to function properly. Here are just a few of the most important thing that you can do to maintain your septic system:

One of the most important thing that you can do is remember to reduce any garbage going to the drain. Every time you flush the toilet or turn on the water everything is going to the septic tank. So, if you are putting weird things down the drain then you will likely block it up. You do not want to put out garbage such as wrappers, plastics of any kind, or even chewing gum. The more garbage that is put down the drain the more likely to become clogged. You also want to be aware that you should not use the garbage disposal because the bacteria can't handle a lot of things through the garbage disposal.

Speaking of bacteria, you do not want to mess with the bacteria in the septic system at all. You want to ensure that the colonies of bacteria are making a good living. Along with not using the garbage disposal, you do not want to use liquid drain cleaners. These cleaners are very good at getting rid of clogs but they are also very good at killing all of the bacteria in the system. If the bacteria in the system are killed then the sewage will not be broken down properly.

Septic Tank And Drain Field

You might be surprised where your septic tank and drain field are located. Most of the time your septic tank will be a few feet below the lowest part of the home, and it will be in your yard. This is a good place to have it so you are not parking on it constantly. You also want to know where the drain field is so you do not obstruct the drain field at all. If you do not know where your septic tank or drain field are then you should have a plumber locate them for you, just so you can be careful with them.
